When men despise and reject the word of God, refuse to hear it when it is brought to their very doors, and seldom or never read it from sabbath to sabbath, though the providence of God has made them accountable for it; when they leave out, in their religious opinions, such parts of it as do not suit their views, and wish to cut out all such passages as are directly contrary to their sinful practices; what is all this hut showing, in reality, the same enmity to God as king Jehoiakim did when he cut the roll with a penknife? It is a refusing to submit their will to God's will; it is declaring their dislike of it; it is setting up their poor finite wisdom in opposition to the infinite wisdom of Almighty God. Whenever any indulge a wish to mangle, fritter, explain away, or leave out any part of the word of God, either in their principles or practice, it is at once declaring that they dislike his yoke, that they will not submit to his method of saving sinners, and that they will not have Him to reign over them; and what greater guilt, what greater proof can they give of enmity to God, than to pour contempt in this way upon his blessed word, aud to pick and choose what they will believe and practise, and reject what they will not? 2. But the folly of such conduct is as great as the guilt of it; because it is impossible to destroy the threatenings or to avoid the judgments of God by neglecting, or mangling, or cutting in pieces his holy word.
